X Factor 2013 winner Sam Bailey is Christmas number 1

Although the Christmas number one single doesn’t mean as much as it did before the days of iTunes, it’s still an achievement and something that the industry aims at. The nation’s Christmas number one was announced by Scott Mills and Jameela Jamil on Radio 1 during a special edition of the Official Chart Show. For X Factor winner Sam Bailey being number one must be amazing given that it wasn’t that long ago that she was a prison officer. More amazing must have been that she’s sold twice as many singles as the UK’s number 2 song Happy by US star Pharrell Williams.

Bailey is having a great Christmas so far as she was crowned X Factor winner last week and has Skyscraper in at number one this week. She’s staying humble about her success as she’s donating the proceeds from the song to charity. The charities benefitting are Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity and Together For Short Lives.

For Bailey, “Being Number One is absolutely amazing. It really is the icing on the cake and it means Great Ormond Street Children's Charity and Together For Short Lives will benefit from the single, which makes it extra special.” With 149,000 sales Skyscraper has outstripped all other songs this week by a wide margin and it’s become one of the fastest-selling singles of 2013.

One More Sleep by Leona Lewis is third in the singles chart and Robbie Williams has retained the top spot in the album chart with Swings Both Ways. Robbie’s album was up against One Direction’s Midnight Memories and Since I Saw You Last, the latest album by former bandmate Gary Barlow. Others with great album sales this week include Olly Murs, who was at number 4 with Right Place Right Time, and Beyonce with her self-titled album, which stayed at number 5.
