X-Factor 2013: Semi-final week Elton John versus Beyoncé

Penultimate week for X-Factor 2013 and the semi-final saw the four remaining contestants pitch Elton John against Beyoncé as they each choose a song from each of these mega stars. No one wanted to be the one to go so close to being a finalist.

Nicholas McDonald was up first with the huge Beyoncé number “Halo” and unfortunately it was a little big for him and he was a little pitchy and emotional which came across in his voice and a not so great performance. He picked himself up for his second performance of Elton John’s “Don’t let the sun go down on me”.

Luke Friend, recovering from his bottom two sing off last week, did his best to pull out all the stops. His first performance was an almost recognisable version of Beyoncé’s "Best thing I never had" and was followed by a more straight forward rendition of Elton John’s “Something about the way you look tonight”. No doubt he was on edge about being in the bottom two again on Sunday and not making it to the final.

Rough Copy gave their version of Beyoncé’s "Survivor" before Elton John’s “Sorry seems to be the hardest word” but were always going to be at risk this weekend.

Sam Bailey continued her march for the X-Factor crown with another two great performances which included Beyoncé’s “If I were a boy” and the classic Elton John number “Candle in the wind” which closed off the Saturday night show.

Sunday night saw former X-factor winner Leona Lewis appear on the stage again. Her initial dress was somewhat garish until suddenly the skirt disappeared and a pile of mini dancing Christmas trees appeared and people started emerging from Christmas presents. She was followed by Michael Buble swing his way through “You make me feel so young”.

After a charity feature it was over to the outcome of the public vote. Unsurprisingly Sam Bailey was through and the second and ony other act automatically going through was Nicholas McDonald. Luke versus Rough Copy in the sing off. Luke was up first with Keane’s “Somewhere only we know”. Rough Copy followed with “End of the Road”. The Judges were torn – Gary went with his own Rough Copy, as did Nicole. Louis went with his own boy Luke Friend and Sharon decided to take it to deadlock. Luke made it. Rough copy went home.

The X-Factor final will be held in Wembley Arena next Saturday and will kick off on Saturday at 8pm with the results show, and the results show, which will feature the announcement of the X-Factor champion 2013, kicking off on Sunday evening from 7.30pm.
