According to Screen Daily, Tom Hardy is currently in talks to play the infamous British gangsters Ronald and Reginald Kray in a crime thriller.

The working title of the movie is Legend, written and directed by Brian Helgeland, whose previous credits include the critically acclaimed pictures, L.A. Confidential and Mystic River.

Helgeland talked about his upcoming movie at a Writer’s Guild of America event in LA in October last year, after he spent time researching the project in London, where he met Krays associate Freddie Foreman.

The 36-year-old Hardy confirmed the talks in an interview with MailOnline: 'All the plans are on the table. There's a lot of crossing the t's and dotting the i's, and there's a lot of shift and geography to work out. It would be difficult. It's quite technical and I'm a bit of an anorak'.

'There's a physical transfer; we'd have to shoot one bit, go away come back and shoot it all again with another part. I've never dreamt of playing two people on the screen!'

The lives of the Kray brothers have already been on screen in the 1990 feature movie, ‘The Krays’, which starred Spandau Ballet’s Martin and Gary Kemp portraying the gangsters.

The Kray twins were involved in a series of armed robberies, arson, protection rackets, assaults, and several murders with their gang The Firm during the '50s and '60s, and were owners of the West End nightclub, Esmeralda's Barn.

They were arrested on 9 May 1968 and were both sentenced to life imprisonment. Ronnie remained Broadmoor Hospital until his death on 17 March 1995, but Reggie was released from prison on compassionate grounds in August 2000, eight weeks before his death from cancer.

Hardy is already set to star in the reboot of Mad Max in 2015, and he will also be playing the role of Elton John in the forthcoming biopic titled Rocketman, and it was recently reported that the actor will also be joining the cast of BBC drama Peaky Blinders for its second season.
