Fans of The Simpsons will no doubt be familiar with Homer's tipple Duff Beer and may even have found themselves craving a sip now and again. Well good news folks, the people at 21st Century Fox are about to launch a fully licensed version of Duff Beer in the UK market.
The brand has been instilled in peoples minds for over 25 years as the choice beer of Homer and his buddies at Moe's Tavern. The plan to brew and sell a licensed version of the beer has come about as a tactic to kill counterfeit beer makers using the copyrighted name.
The beer, which is described as having "a very good balance of flavour and refreshment to it. It's fairly deep golden in colour. It's got a hint of fruit to it. It's got a caramel aromatic to it.", will be launched first in Chile to see what reaction it gets there. Chile is where the most instances of counterfeit Duff Beer has been seen with the company having serious problems quelling the vibrant market there.
Jeffrey Godsick, head of consumer products at 21st Century Fox, explained the situation saying "Once you see enough piracy, you are faced with two choices. One is deciding to fight it, and the other is deciding to go out with it." However, excited fans will be very disappointed to hear that Duff Man will not be a part of any promotional campaign with Godsick saying the beer is "a completely stand-alone brand, you will not see any characters from the show involved in the marketing in any way".
Godsick added "I think there’s potential to have Duff everywhere in the world." Based on the beer's performance in Chile, a worldwide launch could happen in 2016 with the beer hitting shelves in the UK and Europe as well as other markets in South and Central America.
