The talk of Hollywood yesterday was not focused on who won what (our Colin, Natalie Portman, and The Social Network if you're interested) at the Golden Globes, what really preoccupied film insiders and the glitterati was where GG host Ricky Gervais disappeared to for a whole hour of the ceremony. One minute he's seriously offending A-listers like Angelina Jolie and Robert Downey Jr, and the next - gone - prompting some to speculate that the funny man from Reading had been fired.
According to The New York Daily News, however, Ricky emailed to insist that he was not frog-marched off stage, 'I did every single introduction I was meant to. There just happened to be a long gap. This is because I was allowed to choose who I would introduce in advance. I obviously chose presenters who I had the best jokes for. (And who I knew had a good sense of humour). Everyone took it well and the atmosphere backstage and at the after show was great.'
However, Ricky's bosses at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association might not be in total agreement. Head honcho Philip Berk said,'Some of the things he said were totally unacceptable. He definitely crossed the line. And some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that's Ricky. Any of the references to individuals is certainly not something the Hollywood Foreign Press condones.'
