Sydney Pollack dies aged 73

The American film-maker, producer and actor Sydney Pollack has died at the age of 73. Pollack was widely regarded as an actor's director working with some of the most iconic Hollywood stars including Robert Redford, Barbara Streisand, Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. His career included films as diverse as Tootsie, The Firm and Michael Clayton.

Pollack won a best director Oscar for his 1985 drama Out of Africa which also scooped the best film award. Nominated for numerous Oscars as a director in a career spanning over 40 years in recent times Pollack was also in demand as an actor. One of his most memorable acting parts was in his 1982 film Tootsie, in which Pollack played Dustin Hoffman's long suffering agent.
