Shakira and Gerard Pique announce the birth of baby boy

Colombian popstar Shakira and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique have confirmed the birth of son Milan Pique Mebarak with a message on the Waka Waka star's website. The 6lb 6oz baby boy was delivered on the 22th of January at 9.36pm (8.36 GMT) in Barcelona (Spain) and both mother and child are in excellent health.

Using once again her popularity to highlight the struggles of the less-fortunates, the Grammy Award-winning musician has set up together with Pique a virtual baby shower website where people can make donations to UNICEF.

The invitation states: “To celebrate the arrival of our first child, we hope that, in his name, other less privileged children in the world can have their basic needs covered through gifts and donations. Thank you for sharing this unforgettable moment with us.”

The charity, which provides long-term humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries, will use the money specifically for immunisations, rehydration salts and baby food.

UNICEF wasn't a random choice: Shakira has been a global Goodwill Ambassador for them since 2003, travelling to see first-hand the problems that millions of children are facing in developing countries. The star is also the founder of Pies Descalzos (Barefoot Foundation), a US non-profit, non-governmental organisation working to improve the conditions of displaced children in her native Colombia.
