Russell Brand dazzles on Match of the Day

Match of the Day threw up a nice surprise on Saturday evening when comedian Russell Brand made an appearance in the studio. Brand joined in the discussions with host Gary Lineker as well as analysts Alan Shearer and World Cup winner Leonardo.

Don't worry though, the BBC were not severely short of pundits on the day, this was all in aid of Sport Relief which has been stepping up its campaign in the past couple of weeks.

Brand, who is a huge West Ham supporter, put on his analyst cap to give his thoughts on his teams loss to Manchester United. West Ham were defeated 2-0 with both goals coming from the boot of Wayne Rooney.

Brand was certainly not 100% impartial though and he had some stern words for the referee for his role in the build up to Wayne Rooney's wonder strike. He believed Rooney was guilty of a foul right before he lobbed keeper Adrian from just inside the halfway line. On the perceived foul, Brand said "The East End has not seen that sort of injustice since the dark days of Jack the Ripper".

As one would expect when it comes to a man sometimes described as being like Marmite, Brand drew a mixed reaction from the public who took to Twitter in force to let their opinions be known. At the end of the day though, Sport Relief benefited hugely and football fans got something a little different from their usual Saturday night routine.
