Ricky has a laff

Award ceremonies eh? The scourge of the journalist. They have to be covered, but are usually so monumentally dull and full of back-slapping that the temptation is to slowly asphyxiate yourself rather than stay up one more minute to see who won best performance in a musical or comedy. This year there were a few moments that made the Golden Globes more bearable than usual, however, most of which revolved around Ricky Gervais taking the mick out of other famous people in his faux-everyman style.

Aside from the predictable plastic surgery and Angelina Jolie piss taking, our man Ricky managed to crack some actual funnies, starting with his dig at mildly nauseating National Treasure Paul McCartney’s divorce from Heather Mills: ‘We were on the same plane to get here,’ said Ricky during his set up. ‘I was in first and he was behind me in coach. Well, he spent a lot of money last year.’ Amazingly this got something of a jeer from the assembled throng of lovey-darlings, to which Ricky responded. ‘I don't think we have to feel too sorry for him. He's doing alright.’

And then there was this one about everyone’s favourite sex tape-making grizzly Celt: ‘The great thing about the Golden Globes is that it crushes prejudice and stereotypes. A particular stereotype is that Irishmen are drunk, hairy hellraisers. Now please welcome Colin Farrell.’ Oh, those Irish, eh?

But the thing that got most tongues wagging was Robert Downey Jnr, who made a speech that plumbed the classic tradition of bigging yourself up while appearing to be self-deprecating. It’s a useful tactic if you ever find yourself faced with untold riches and a shiny new pot on stage in front of millions, which you can see here through a hilariously bad YouTube video of a man filming his telly. Enjoy. What’s that you say? Who won what? Who cares?
