Prince George to be featured on a stamp in New Zealand

Plans were announced today by the New Zealand Post to release two stamps to commemorate the visit of Prince William, Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton and Prince George to New Zealand this week. There are also plans to release a coin marking the occasion.

The image to be used for one of the stamps is the first family portrait of the Cambridge family shortly after Prince George was born. That photograph was taken by Kate's dad Michael Middleton and it had the distinction of being the first family portrait released to the public last year.

Prince George was only a month old when it was taken at the family home in Bucklebury, Berkshire. The use of the photo marks a complete turnaround in fortune for George's grandfather as he was heavily criticised at the time for pointing the camera into the light.

A spokesperson for the New Zealand Post revealed the idea behind the stamps saying "New Zealand Post is eager to welcome the young couple and commemorate this occasion with a special stamp issue for their April tour. New Zealanders are excited for the arrival of the young royals, with over half of New Zealand having tuned in to their wedding in 2011.".

Prince George will remain down under on his first royal engagement with parents William and Kate as the trio will continue to cover New Zealand and Australia over the course of three weeks.
