Hotel Transylvania 2 star and musician Selena Gomez has been diagnosed with Lupus. She has been taking a break from music and the public eye in order to receive proper treatment.

In late 2013 and early 2014 Gomez cancelled her Asia and Australia tour which flared up rumours that she was going through rehab to overcome her drug addiction. Gomez recently told Billboard Magazine, "I wanted so badly to say, 'You guys have no idea. I'm in chemotherapy. I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again"

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that consists of the immune system becoming hyperactive and attacking healthy tissue, cells and organs such as the kidney, heart, brain and skin. It is often treated with drugs and chemotherapy which help suppress the immune system.

Symptoms may include extreme tiredness, rashes, joint pain and swelling. Unfortunately the exact cause is unknown, but could be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

It is not very common, only affecting around 15,000 people in England and Wales with 90% of them being woman between the ages of 15-50. Other stars that have this disease include rapper and TV personality Nick Cannon, British soul and R&B singer Seal, American R&B singer Toni Braxton and Snoop Dogg's daughter, Cori Broadus.
