Polanski to fight extradition to the US

Roman Polanski is set to fight his extradition to the United States on a sex charge from the 1970s. The 76-year-old director, who resides in France, was arrested at the weekend in Switzerland after travelling to Zurich to receive a liftime achievement award at the city's film festival.

"He is in fighting mood and determined to defend himself," Polanski's lawyer Herve Temime said in an interview with France Info radio, adding that the director of Chinatown was a shocked after being arrested because he had been a regular visitor to Switzerland.

Temime concluded by stating that he had attempted to have Polanski released from prison in Switzerland but the alpine country's Justice Ministry have made it clear that its unlikely the director will be granted bail.

Polanski is wanted in the US for skipping the country the night before his formal sentencing for a charge of unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl who he had allegedly drugged in 1977. The stars of Hollywood and Europe have come out in force in support of the Polish born actor with Monica Bellucci, Fanny Ardant and Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai all signing a petition demanding his immediate release.
