It’s not always true that the book is better than the movie (although that’s generally the case). The movies featured here are way better than the books that inspired their creation.

No Country for Old Men won the Best Director Oscar in 2007 for The Coen Brothers, and Javier Bardem’s outstanding performance also drew praise. Cormac McCarthy’s 2005 source novel was also well received but it didn’t make the sort of impact the adaptation did.

The Silence of The Lambs was a truly frightening film with a standout performance. Visually chilling and compulsive viewing, the movie resonates with viewers far more than the novel on which it’s based.

This is another movie with standout performances that lift it above the novel on which it’s based. Mario Puzo's novel is excellent too but why bother getting through such a big book when the movie version of The Godfather’s so good?

A Clockwork Orange is an odd film but it’s easier to understand than the novel which inspired it. Anthony Burgess' novel is written from the protagonist’s point of view which means all that wonderful slang Malcolm McDowell speaks while playing Alex has to be read and understood by the reader.
