Best Christmas films to watch with children

Christmas is a family time. It’s also a very cold time of the year so staying indoors and watching movies just makes sense. The best movies to watch together at that time of year don’t have to be the Christmas themed ones so we’ve taken a general look at the best movies for the family at the holiday season. Home Alone is set at Christmas time but it doesn’t involve all the yuletide celebrations. A great movie for any time of the year but especially at Christmas.

Elf is a classic. It’s silly, it’s funny, it’s inoffensive. It gets you laughing even when you’ve seen it before. Definitely one for the whole family at Christmas time.

It’s a Wonderful Life is a classic most of the family can enjoy. Some kids will be put off because it’s in black and white so perhaps this one’s better for the older members of the family.

There are no better family movies than the National Lampoons series, so get National Lampoon Christmas Vacation on Netflix and sit back to enjoy classic scenes like the moment when Chevy Chase finds a raccoon in the Christmas tree.

The Muppets a Christmas Carol is the best way of watching the Dickens classic story on screen when you want to enjoy it with the family.

Miracle on 34th Street is another family movie that will only really appeal to older kids. Some of the films on this list will hold the attention of a three year old but this isn’t one of them. That said, the 1994 remake with Richard Attenborough is a fine movie that will be enjoyed by those older enough to sit still for 90 minutes.

The Santa Clause is downright silly but this Tim Allen movie from 1994 is a hoot.

If you’re after something a little different and your kids are old enough, check out Nightmare Before Christmas. Director Tim Burton is known for bringing the world imaginative and very different stuff so no wonder this Christmas story is a cut above the rest, while being uniquely different to the normal seasonal offerings.
