Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem expecting second child

Spanish cinema royalty Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem are expecting their second child. According to the New York Post, the closest America gets to an excitable tabloid, Cruz is three months pregnant. The couple have yet to confirm the news.

Their first child, Leo, was born in 2011. A second would be a neat match for their Oscar tally, as both have an Academy Award for best supporting roles, Bardem for No Country For Old Men, Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Cruz spoke of motherhood as a "revolutionary experience. From the first second, you feel so much love. That's the best way I can describe it. It transforms you completely, in a second. Nature is very wise and gives you nine months to prepare, but in that moment, when you see that face, you are transformed forever."

Apart from parenthood, Cruz and Bardem also have another happy event lined up for the autumn. Their new film, The Counselor, is directed by Ridley Scott from a script by the writer of No Country For Old Men, Cormac McCarthy.

Michael Fassbender plays the title role of the counselor, introduced to the cocaine importing business by career criminal Reiner, played by Bardem. Brad Pitt also stars and Cruz has a substantial role in what is likely to be one of 2013’s major releases.

By the time it makes it onto UK screens, Cruz is likely to be on maternity leave from any promotional duties. Cruz family relatives will be busy knitting babygros, as Cruz’s sister Monica, the lingerie model, is also expecting. Penelope’s news is likely to be made official in the near future. Remembering Bardem’s chilling portrayal of the assassin in No Country For Old Men, it’s to be hoped that the delivery room staff don’t put him in charge of the gas and air machine.
