Most expensive celebrity divorces of all time

When most everyday people deal with broken hearts and worry about the future, celebrities spend more on their lawyers' fees than average folk split during a divorce. It used to be movie stars and rock stars that made the headlines when they split from their partners. Today, entrepreneurs head the list. You'll recognise all the names because businesspeople have as much of a high profile as the likes of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

10 - Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva - $80 million

When Kevin Costner divorced actress Cindy Silva, it cost him $80 million. It was either that or his career, as his wife told him to quit accepting sexy roles. Apparently, his wandering eye also contributed to the end of his 16-year marriage.

9 - Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison - $85 million to $118 million

Harrison Ford's affair with co-star Carrie Fisher is out in the open thanks to Fisher's book The Princess Diarist. The pair's three-month relationship during the filming of the first Star Wars movie was long rumoured. Harrison's relationship with screenwriter Melissa Mathison didn't end because of his affair with Fisher. He met Mathison two years after filming wrapped on Star Wars. They married in 1983 and divorced in 2004 after rumours that Ford had been seeing other women.

8 – Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt - $100 million

These guys are the only famous couple on this list. The couple has spent $1 million on legal fees during their divorce, which has been ongoing since 2016. Arguments over custody of their six children and an ugly accusation of child abuse have been the headlines. To date, they have not settled, but it's claimed that Pitt offered $100 million to Jolie to make their parting official.

7 – Steven Spielberg and Amy Irving - $100 million

Steven Spielberg and Amy Irving were only married four years. They met in 1985 on the set of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and split in 1989. A California judge refused their prenuptial agreement because it was written on a napkin. Irving got $100 million. That's $25 million a year, a fantastic amount that would be worth $58 million today, thanks to inflation.

6 – Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren - $110 million

Tiger Woods had multiple affairs during his six-year marriage to Elin Nordegren. Woods made headlines by driving the couple's Escalade into a tree outside their home. Swedish golfer Jesper Parnevik took some of the blame. "I'm kind of filled with sorrow for Elin since me and my wife are at fault for hooking her up with him, and we probably thought he was a better guy than he is." Woods took an indefinite leave from golf to work on his marriage, but that didn't do the trick.

5 – Neil Diamond and Marcia Murphey - up to $150 million

Marcia Murphey and Neil Diamond divorced after 25 years together. That's better than most of the couples featured here. There was no confirmation of the settlement, but it's rumoured they simply split the singer's $300 million worth down the middle. At the time, Diamond told the Daily Mail his ex got "got enough to live on for the rest of her life."

4 – Michael Jordan and Juanita Vanoy - $168 million

Michael Jordon married Juanita Vanoy in 1989 during his second season at Chicago Bulls. The couple split in 2006 and settled on a $168 million payout to Vanoy.

3 – Mel Gibson and Robyn Moore - $425 million

We're now looking at serious money. Mel Gibson and Robyn Moore's $425 million settlement is three times the amount Jordan handed over to his wife. Gibson and Moore spent 31 years together, and they have seven kids together. If you believe the rumours, Moore decided to divorce after Gibons's profile arrest for drink-driving in 2006. That's the arrest in which he made several anti-Semitic remarks. By the time of their divorce, they shared $850 million of assets, split down the middle.

2 – Rupert Murdoch and Anna Mann - $1.7 billion

Suddenly, the $425 million looks small when you read that Anna Mann took $1.7 billion from her divorce. The Scottish journalist married the media mogul in 1967 and stayed with him till 1999. After paying $1.7 billion to his ex-wife, Murdoch only left 17 days before tying the knot again.

1 - Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Bezos - $38 billion

Bill and Melinda Gates recently announced they're splitting up. They're not divorced yet, so they're not on the list. They're likely to hit the top when the divorce goes through, assuming their $130.5 billion net worth is split equally. Until that happens, Jeff Bezos wears the crown. In 2020, Bezos became the first person to be worth $200 billion. The pandemic and the lockdown that resulted from it made that man more money than anyone ever needs. We're not sure why MacKenzie Bezos didn't get half of that when she parted from the entrepreneur who looks like he could play a James Bond villain. His firm now owns the rights to that long-running movie franchise, and he's left his job at Amazon, so you never know.
