Kim Kardashian files for divorce after 72 days of marriage

Even the cynics have been a little surprised by the news that Kim Kardashian has filed for divorce after just 72 days of marriage to NBA star Kris Humphries, citing irreconcilable differences.

The two were married in a lavish ceremony on 20 August, and four million viewers tuned in to watch the nuptials on a special edition of Kim's reality show 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians'.

In a statement to E! Kim said: "After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage. I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision.

"I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don't work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best."

As the dust settles, questions are being raised as to whether the whole marriage was a sham designed to rake in money and publicity.

Kim and Kris netted around $18 million from exclusive deals, photographs and interviews - that's $250,000 for every day that they spent as a married couple.

Kris has released his own statement through a representative: "I love my wife and am devastated to learn she filed for divorce ... I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make it work."

Kim has a prenuptial agreement in place and has hired top divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, who has also worked with the likes of Britney Spears and Angelina Jolie.
