Oscar winning actress Julia Roberts' half-sister Nancy Motes was found dead at a Los Angeles residence last Sunday.

The 37-year old Motes was discovered by paramedics in bathtub full of water after a possible drug overdose, but authorities are not ruling out suicide.

She was the daughter of Julia and Eric Roberts' mother Betty Lou and their stepfather Michael Motes.

The case is currently under investigation and an autopsy scheduled, but according to Los Angeles County Coroner's assistant chief Ed Winter, "She has a history of some medical issues. Some prescription drugs were found near her body."

Motes had worked as a production assistant on Glee, and was planning on marrying her fiancé, John Dilbeck, a film and TV locations manager in May.

In a statement to People magazine, the Roberts family said they were "shocked and devastated" by Motes's death.

"It is with deep sadness that the family of Nancy Motes confirms that she was found dead in Los Angeles yesterday of an apparent drug overdose. There is no official report from the Coroner's office yet. The family is both shocked and devastated.”

Roberts, 46, who is nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for her role in "August: Osage County," did not attend the Oscar nominees luncheon on Monday.

Motes had battled with depression and obesity (she had undergone gastric bypass surgery in 2010) for a good part of her life and her relationship with her famous older sibling was believed to very strained.

According to the New York Daily News, Motes claimed that her sister was "cruel" and "not even that good of an actress" and in other tweets that have now been removed also wrote "Just so you all know "America's Sweetheart" is a bitch!"

In an interview with The Sun last year, she said she believed that she was embarrassment to Roberts because of her weight.

“When you’re in a family of very, very exceptionally beautiful people it’s intimidating. I think that growing up as Pretty Woman's little sister has definitely made me try to see the person inside and not the person outside. A lot of my life I felt judged for my weight,” she said.

Motes also claimed Roberts did not support her desire to become an actress, “Julia did not want to see me go down that path, mostly because I was overweight," she said.

Mote’s autopsy and toxicology results are expected to take up to six to eight weeks.
