Comedian Jimmy Tarbuck is the latest celebrity to be questioned in regard to alleged historic sex offences. The 73 year-old was arrested by North Yorkshire police conducting an investigation into the sexual assault of a boy in Harrogate 30 years ago.

Tarbuck was arrested at his home in Kingston upon Thames and bailed. Evidence was uncovered by officers at Scotland Yard involved with Operation Yewtree, Although they decided that the allegation did not come under their remit, they passed information on to the North Yorkshire officers.

"North Yorkshire police can confirm that a 73 year-old man has been arrested in connection with a historic child sex abuse investigation in Harrogate," their statement said. "The complaint relates to an incident that occurred in the late 1970s when the victim was a young boy. It would not be appropraite to comment further at this stage."

Tarbuck, father of actress Liza Tarbuck, is part of the UK's comedy establishment, seen regularly at charity golf tournaments. The Liverpudlian comedian was at school with John Lennon and came to fame in the 1960s as the host of Sunday Night at the London Palladium. He went on to host many quiz shows for ITV. He has an OBE for services to entertainment and charity fund-raising.

Although police made it clear that the Tarbuck arrest is not part of the Yewtree investigation, it is apparent that the enquiry set up after the Jimmy Savile scandal continues to have wide repercussions for many 60s and 70s British television celebrities. It seems that a week does not go by without further famous names being implicated, although, to date, sports presenter Stuart Hall is the only one to admit to allegations of sexual abuse.

Tarbuck refused to comment on the allegations, advising reporters that they would have to contact his solicitor.
