Hathaway happy to be Catwoman at last

Anne Hathaway has said she is fulfilling a childhood ambition by playing Catwoman in the latest superhero hokum The Dark Knight Rises. The actress plays the feline fatale in Christopher Nolan’s latest episode of the Batman saga.

"I kind of got my big break in The Princess Diaries,” she told the HitFix website, "and during the press rounds for that everyone asked me, 'Did you always want to be a princess growing up?' And the truth was, no, I wanted to be Catwoman. And I think a lot of women feel that way, and the fact that I am actually her is such a dream come true."

Michelle Pfeiffer previously played the part on screen, but Hathaway wasn’t too influenced by that portrayal. "I was well acquainted with the character's dimensions," she said. "She's one of my favorite characters in the comic book world and in the movie world. But I didn't go back to any of the other ones because I'm in Chris' Gotham City. For me, it didn’t make a lot of sense to look at them for inspiration, even as extraordinary a performance that Michelle Pfeiffer gave; that was Tim Burton’s Gotham."

Hathaway said she admired the character’s ambiguity, and the idea that you were never sure if she was a villain or Batman’s ally. "I loved Catwoman's sense of humour. I love how sly she is. I love how she walks the fence and you don't know which side she's going to come down on. She's totally independent. Let's face it, she's badass."

Although she does tend to get distracted by a ball of wool.
