Godzilla set to destroy cities again

With Christopher Nolan’s Batman, his overseeing of the Superman reboot and Kick-Ass, Hollywood is all about comic adaptations at the moment – if it’s a cartoon with speech bubbles then it’s gonna get a big screen feature film.

To tie in with the public's lust for superhero movies, Legendary Pictures have snapped up the rights to the king of all superhero films, Godzilla. According to Variety, the film studio (with a little cash in hand from Warner Bros) have poached the iconic character from Japan’s firm Toho Company and will release a movie in 2012.

The CEO of Legendary said: ‘Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise’.

Adding; ‘Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop culturally relevant for as long as it has.’

Best we all pretend we didn't see Matthew Broderick's Godzilla back in 1998 then.
