Gervais to host 2012 Golden Globes?

Rumour has it that Ricky Gervais will host next year's Golden Globe ceremony - despite the controversy that surrounded his performance at the 2011 awards.

According to the NY Post, Gervais has been asked to return by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for a third year as master of ceremonies.

The comedian added fuel to the speculation by tweeting the NY Post article, adding: "Ooooooh! The plot thickens... Thoughts?"

Earlier this year, Gervais suggested that he had already been invited back as host: "The ratings went up again and the organisers asked me to consider a third year. I don't think I should."

He added: "'But I'll tell you this. If they do invite me back and I accept, I'm going to pull exactly the same s*** again or even worse."

The British actor and comedian took aim at a number of celebrities last year, including Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise, Charlie Sheen and Robert Downey Jr.

After the ceremony, HFPA President Philip Berk said, "He definitely crossed the line. And some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that's Ricky... I had absolutely no idea what Ricky was going to say so anything I heard was heard at the same time you heard it. When you hire Ricky Gervais, you expect the unexpected."

In his blog, Gervais stated that he had "no idea" whether they wanted im back or not. He continued: "It depends on whether they care about fifty delicate egos in the room or the 200 million watching at home who want a laugh."

Hollywood, you have been warned.
