General Aladeen

Last night's Oscars wouldn't have been a serious awards ceremony without some merriment from Sacha Baron Cohen. The comedy prankster turned up dressed as his latest character, dictator General Aladeen, in order to stump up some publicity for his upcoming movie, The Dictator.

With a pot under his arm purporting to be Kim Jong II's ashes, the funnyman proceeded to wreak havoc on the red carpt by pouring the contents of the urn over US presenter Ryan Seacrest. Unfortunately, Seacrest's mum hadn't packed his Oscar night bag for him: his Burberry shirt was splattered with pancake mixture (aka Jong's 'ashes') and he didn't have a spare. 'Now when people ask what you're wearing, you will say Kim Jong-il!' quipped Cohen. Unfortunately the presenter didn't immediately see the funny side.

But he soon chirped up. A quick twirl on his Twitter page and the realisation that he was 'trending' heavily in cyberspace was all it took to raise a wry chuckle. He later tweeted: 'A lot of people hitting up afterparties tonight...me? I'm hosting a pancake breakfast tomorrow.' Good one Ryan....

Sacha Baron Cohen is no stranger to making a statement at a red carpet event. He famously winched in from the ceiling at the MTV Awards wearing a g-string and angel wings in character for his then latest film Bruno.
