Gamu Nhengu forced to leave the UK

The controversy over Gamu Nhengu’s exit from the X Factor looks set to rumble on for a little while yet. Yesterday we reportedthat Cheryl Cole had been forced to eliminate the Zimbabwean because of visa problems that could come to bite the show on the backside, and it turns out that the show’s bosses were right: an official letter has been sent that demands that they leave the country, and now the fan’s favourite will have to leave the country or face being deported.

According to The Sun, Gamu’s mother Noutula had brought her family over on the same work visa, and once the Home Office found out that she had pocketed £16,000 of state benefits that she wasn’t entitled to they decided against renewing the visa. This means that Gamu, 18, and her two brothers will have to return to Zimbabwe with their mother.

‘The applications made by Ms Ngazana and her family were considered in line with the published immigration rules,’ said a UK Border Agency spokeswoman. ‘Ms Ngazana's application was refused as it did not meet all of the conditions for approval.

‘Skilled workers are not allowed recourse to public funds. Her family, who had applied as her dependants, were therefore also refused. Where people are found to have no right to remain in the UK we expect them to leave voluntarily.’
