Free money on the free money highway

Ricky Gervais has revealed how he was caught up in a gold bullion sting that cost him £200,000, after thieves used a photo of his telly alter-ego David Brent on a fake passport to make the deal. However, the thieves were caught when they showed up to buy the gold and showed their fake ID, complete with a picture cut from the front cover of the DVD of the first season of The Office.

The gang transferred money from Gervais’ bank account so they could buy the gold, but weren’t expecting to be arrested after presenting the face of one of Britain’s most recognisable comic actors as their own. Oops.

After they were arrested his bank gave him a call to confirm that he wanted the police to get involved (they needed his permission to do so), and then he met with a local copper.

‘I said, 'How did they think they were going to get away with it?’ he said of the meeting, which happened several years ago. ‘ He (the police officer) said 'They normally get a passport from either a dead man or steal one and replace it with your details and your picture.'

‘The CID man started smirking, so I went, 'What?' and he showed me this passport. We were laughing for ten minutes. All they did was cut out the picture on the first series of The Office DVD! So it's a picture of David Brent sitting at a desk with that little smug look on his face!’
