Fifty Shades of Grey Movie: James Dornan in the lead

So we got it wrong when we predicted that Matt Bomer would be cast as Christian Grey in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie as the White Collar star has been beaten to the role by British actor Jamie Dornan. He’s from Holywood. Nope, not the Californian one that’s spelt a bit differently, but Holywood, County Down, in Northern Ireland.

Dornan, who’s probably best known as Sheriff Graham Humbert in the ABC’s Once Upon a Time series, has replaced Charlie Hunnam who got cold feet about playing kinky billionaire Grey and claimed that his extensive shooting schedule on Sons of Anarchy meant he wouldn’t have time to fit in the movie shoot.

The movie’s director Sam Taylor-Johnson was weighing up his options with names like Chris Evans, Ian Somerhalder and Henry Cavill being banned around. The odds on favourite was Matt Bomer so this bit of casting has taken everyone by surprise.

Dornan is a former model for Armani, Christian Dior and Calvin Klein but he didn’t get the role based on looks alone as the 31 year old had to screen test for the part with Dakota Johnson, who remains in place as Anastasia Steele despite rumours that she was for the chop. Casting pretty much unknown actors for the roles probably means that the budget’s not going to be astronomical. We’re expecting the movie makers to produce films of all three of EL James’ best sellers but that might not happen. We’re still waiting for the sequels for the last big publishing sensation, The Girl the with Dragon Tattoo series, which were first promised for 2012 and now look likely to appear sometime in 2014.

The Fifty Shades of Grey movie is due for an August 2014 release which doesn’t leave the producers much time to sort out the casting of Anastasia's house-mate, Kate. The casting of Dornan isn’t official as yet. No one at Universal has made the announcement as yet but we’re expecting the news to be official pretty soon.
