The actor Paul Walker, best known for his starring role in the “Fast & Furious” film series has died in a car crash north of Los Angeles. Deputies found a Porsche Carrera GT engulfed in flames when they responded to an accident report on Saturday afternoon, said the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. Two people who were found in the car were pronounced dead at the scene.

The 40 year old Walker was a passenger in the Porsche and police have indicated that speed was a factor in the crash. Walker had apparently been in the community of Valencia where the crash occurred to attend a charity event for his organization, Reach Out Worldwide.

The Santa Clarita Valley Signal reported that the Porsche crashed into a lamppost and a tree before bursting into flames. The fundraiser, to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan, was being held at a nearby motor racing shop. Guests at the function attempted to extinguish the blaze, but sadly failed.

His “Fast & Furious” co-star Vin Diesel posted a photograph of himself and Walker arm-in-arm on Instagram with the caption: “Brother I will miss you very much. I am absolutely speechless.”

The “Fast & Furious” string of films made Walker a star and proved unusually successful as a franchise, with the 6th and most recent instalment grossing more than $788 million worldwide. Walker was working on the seventh film when the accident occurred.

Universal Pictures, the studio behind the films released this statement

“All of us at Universal are heartbroken. Paul was truly one of the most beloved and respected members of our studio family for 14 years, and this loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the ‘Fast and Furious’ films, and to countless fans.”

A friend of Walker’s who attended the ill fated fundraiser, Bill Townsend, told AP Radio, “He was very happy. He was smiling at everybody, just tickled that all these people came out to support this charity. He was doing what he loved. He was surrounded by friends, surrounded by cars.”

Walker is survived by his 15-year-old daughter.
