Elisabeth Sladen dies

Elisabeth Sladen, one of the most important actors in the history of the Doctor Who TV series, passed away last night after a long battle with cancer. She was 63 years old.

Sladen, who played Sarah Jane Smith in the show and the CBBC spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures, had been on the show since Tom Baker’s time back in the early 70s, had also played a part in the modern reimagining. She was beloved by fans of the show as being the best Doctor’s assistant ever, and has drawn plaudits from fans old and new. Current Doctor Matt Smith has also paid tribute to her.

‘What struck me about Lis was her grace,’ said Smith. ‘She welcomed me, educated me, and delighted me with her tales and adventures on Doctor Who. And she also seemed to have a quality of youth that not many people retain as they go through life. Her grace and kindness will stay with me because she had such qualities in abundance and shared them freely.

‘I will miss her, as will the world of Doctor Who and all the Doctors that had the good pleasure to work with Lis Sladen and travel the universe with Sarah-Jane.’
