Corrie triumphs at National Television Awards

Coronation Street took one of the top awards of the night at the National Television Awards, beating rival Eastenders to win Best Serial Drama.

Corrie stars paid tribute to late cast member Betty Driver, who died in October aged 91, as they picked up the award.

Sally Dynevor, who plays Sally Webster on the soap, accepted the award, saying: "Thank you so much for this, thank you everybody who's voted for Coronation Street. This one is for Betty Driver."

Coronation Street producer Phil Collinson added: "Betty was a marvel. She was in the show for 42 years and was a wonderful woman. She’d have been so proud."

The veteran actress, who played barmaid Betty Williams in the ITV soap, was originally signed up on a three month contract - but stayed for 42 years right up until her death.

BBC One's Eastenders has dominated in the category in the recent past, but Corrie's plotline over the past year has grabbed lots of media attention.
