Classic Horror Movies: Our Top 5 Choices

When it comes to choosing our top horror movies there is certainly plenty of choice. Not for the faint hearted plenty of the classic horror movies will leave the viewer cowering in the corner. When it comes down to it our top 5 classic horror choices are:

A Nightmare on Elm Street

The lead character of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Freddy Krueger is synonymous with horror. With his severely burnt face and knives as fingers he taunted people in their sleep. This 1984 slasher film made a huge mark on the horror movie genre creating a massive franchise and resulting in sequels. The movie was remade in 2010.

Alien

The 1978 film Alien is considered a classic horror movie albeit that it overlaps the sci-fi genre. The film is based around the spaceship Nostromos, and its invasion by an aggressive killer alien who stalks the crew of the ship. Of course the most memorable scene is definitely not one for watching over dinner as an alien burst out of the chest of crew member Kane who became the host for The Alien.

Psycho

Hitchcock’s 1960’s classic horror Psycho is arguably one of the most notorious horror movies of our time. The classic shower scene and spine chilling screeching violin music easily earns it its place in our top 5 choices.

The Exorcist

The 1973 film adaptation of the William Peter Blatty novel is based on the demonic possession of a 12 year old girl and the desperate attempts by her mother and two priests to carry out an exorcism on the child. With the classic head turning and bed levitating scenes The Exorcist is considered one of the scariest movies of all time. The movie was subsequently re-released in the UK in 1998.

The Shining

No top 5 horror movie list would be complete without inclusion of a Stephen King novel adaptation. Of his many works that were adapted for film his third novel The Shining, released on film in 1980, is a classic in the horror genre. The classic line “Here’s Johnny!” as the main character Jack Torrance (portrayed by Jack Nicholson) tears through a door must be one of the most recognisable film scenes of all time.
