Carrey walks out of Dumb and Dumber sequel

Jim Carrey will not now be appearing in the Dumb and Dumber sequel. Which presumably leaves the producers with just Dumb. Or just Dumber – it’s not clear which.

Carrey was unimpressed by the lack of enthusiasm shown by the producers New Line and Warner Bros, and decided to bail out of the project. He told ET Online "I would have thought Dumb And Dumber Too was a no-brainer – after all, it's implied in the title."

Lack of intelligent content in a script would not have seemed to be an obvious deterrent to Carrey’s participation in a project, given some of the films he has made in the last couple of decades. In this case, the involvement of the original directors the Farrelly brothers would have ensured the film stuck to the engaging idiocy of the original. It seems that Carrey was unwilling to revisit past glories.

There has already been a spin-off Dumb and Dumber movie, but it was a prequel, Dumb And Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, that did not involve any of the original cast. With Jeff Daniels from the first film confirmed, shooting on the sequel was set to begin in December, but Carrey’s departure will mean the film is unlikely to ever get further than the script stage.

Carrey’s next appearance on the big screen will be in the company of two rather more illustrious performers. Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi co-star in Burt Wonderstone, a comedy about Las Vegas magicians, set for release early in 2013.
