Bring on the dirty martinis

It's been a long, tortuous process, but it looks like the TV gods have decided to gift us a fifth series of Mad Men. The delay was caused by lengthly contractual discussions between AMC, who air the show, and Lionsgate, the production company. AMC caused friction with the show's creator, Matthew Weiner, by insisting on increased product placement and advertising slots. Villains...

Weiner told The Daily Mail, 'I don’t understand why, with all of the success of the show, they suddenly need to change it. All I want to do is continue to make my show, and make it in the way I want to, with the people I want to make it with. I love the show; I have every intention of it working out. This has been the most creatively satisfyingly experience of my life. I’ve come through it with the cast and with the audience, making the show that I make.'

AMC issued a statement announcing the good news, saying, 'AMC has officially authorized production of season 5 of Mad Men, triggering our option with Lionsgate. While we are getting a later start than in years past due to ongoing, key non-cast negotiations, Mad Men will be back for a fifth season in early 2012.'
