Brand's drug nightmare

In the story arc of any helpless drug addict gone clean, there is always that moment when someone or something intervenes in order to save his/her life. Usually it will take the form of a friend stepping in to save the day, or coming back from the brink of death, or hitting rock bottom, borrowing money from an orphan to score drugs.

Russell Brand is no different, although as far as we’re aware he’s never borrowed money from an orphan. Now a Hollywood star in the making, Brand was a heroin addict for years, and it took the intervention of an unnamed friend and his manager John Noel to get him into rehab.

‘I was probably six months away from - well (my friend) goes, 'You need to stop taking drugs right now or in six months you'll be in prison, a lunatic asylum or dead',’ he said on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories. ‘And that's the first time anyone had said anything like that to me.’

‘I still thought, 'Rehab, I don't like the sound of that'. So that's when John and (my friend) took me in a room... He said, 'Russell needs to go away, because he's doolally but he's got to want to go for himself'.

‘The thing with drug addiction is the person themselves has to make that choice because it's got to come from within, and I go, 'Yeah, I don't think I fancy it'. John went, 'F**k that, you're going'.’
