Brand winds up the stars

Russell Brand seemed to be eager to acquire a little of the Ricky Gervais notoriety as he presented the MTV Movie Awards and littered his hosting duties with off-colour jibes at celebrities. Given the recent lack of success of his own movies, finding a new career might be an astute move.

Arguably his harshest gag was directed at John Travolta, recently the subject of sexual assault allegations. Brand claimed to have given Travolta a massage backstage. "He needed it, man. He was so stiff, I'm telling you!"

He thanked reality-show star Kim Kardashian for taking some of the attention off his short-lived marriage to Katy Perry with her own even briefer marriage last year. He also hoped that she and new partner Kanye West might make a sex tape. "I think of Kim Kardashian as the Stanley Kubrick of sex tapes," Brand joked. "They're always brilliant, but he only does one a decade."

Soft target Charlie Sheen was treated to some predictable gags at the expense of his addictions. "I've taped a bottle of Hennessy and a gram of coke under your chair," Brand said. "In case I start going crazy, just nick it and do a couple of lines."

Brand first met ex-wife Katy Perry at the 2009 MTV video awards. He joked that he was on the lookout for her replacement. "Last time I did an MTV show I ended up marrying someone," he said, before mingling with the host of celebrity beauties who had turned out for the show, and looked wary as he approached.
