Batman meets Superman in new movie

It's the sort of conversation enjoyed by arrested development adults with a comic-book fixation. Who would win in a fight between Batman and Superman? Well duh, Superman has superpowers while Batman just seems to have a fast car, a kinky rubber costume and a laser device for beaming symbols into the sky.

The debate looks like making it onto the big screen though as Hollywood continues to feed the infantile appetites of the average multiplex popcorn-scarfer. An announcement at the San Diego Comic-Con suggested a superhero showdown movie could be on the screens by 2015.

Man Of Steel director Zack Snyder teased the crowd by calling on one of his cast, Harry Lennix, to read an extract from The Dark Knight Falls in which Batman has the drop on Clark Kent (some sort of dirty Krytonite trick then?) "I want you to remember, Clark," Lennix read. "In all the years to come, and all your most private moments, I want you to remember my hand at your throat. I want you to remember the one man who beat you." As if there was any danger of forgetting a ludicrous figure in a mask and skin-tight rubber.

Snyder made it clear that the movie is in its formative stages and it won't be a straightforward "Batman v Superman," but that the extract would give some idea of the themes.

Man of Steel star Henry Cavill will pull on the Superman vest once more. although it's unclear who will be Batman. Christian Bale has made it clear that he has had it with the superhero stuff, so the role is up for grabs. Cue two years of excitable fan speculation about the relative strength of two camp comic-book characters in tights.

Batman and Superman last hit the promo circuit together back in the 1940s, selling US war bonds. They could be doing the film festival circuit together come 2015.
