Awards, awards, awards

Although absent from the award ceremony, Amy Winehouse last night won five of the six Grammy awards she was nominated for. She triumphed in: Record of the Year, Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Pop Vocal Album and Female Pop Vocal Performance. However there was one big shock as Amy lost out to veteran jazz musician Herbie Hancock for Album of the Year.

The other big winner of the night was Kanye West who picked up for awards for Best Rap Song, Best Rap album, Best Rap solo performance and Best Rap performance by a duo or group. The humble star dedicated his awards to his mother who passed away recently.

Also happening last night were the Bafta awards in London where the Brits didn’t fare too well. Atonement, which was set to sweep the board with its 14 nominations, only came away with Best film and the gong for production design. (Although Best film isn’t a bad award to get!) Many expected Keira Knightley to walk away with the Best Actress award for her role in the British film, but the accolade was given to French actress Marion Cotillard, star of Edith Piaf biopic La Vie En Rose.

So that’s it in the world of awards so far. Next stop – The Oscars, which is definitely going on now the writers’ strike has been resolved. Let’s see how the Brits fare there…
