And winner of Sports Personality Of The Year goes to...

Eddie Izzard has completed his 43rd marathon in 52 days. The portly comic set off from London 7 weeks ago, and crossed the Trafalgar Square finishing line yesterday to a huge crowd of welcoming supporters. The huge physical challenge (all in aid of BBC’s charity Sport Relief) kicked off in London, before continuing to Cardiff, Belfast, Edinburgh and then back to London all on foot. After crossing the line Izzard said;

"I don't think what I did was that amazing. Anyone could do it, but people don’t believe I did it. I might as well say that I've just eaten a car."

Of course it wasn’t all plain running for (Sir?) Eddie Izzard; he wore through 14 pairs of trainers, lost toe nails and had to continue stamping through endless blisters to complete the heroic feat.

Highlights of the marathon of all marathons will be shown on BBC later in the year.
