Allen and Brand get frilly in Austen spoof

Lily Allen and Russell Brand are set to star in a spoof adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austen Handheld will see Allen taking the role of the flighty Lydia Bennet and Brand that of her dashing suitor Mr Wickham. Stephen Fry and Carrie Fisher are on board as Mr and Mrs Bennet, but the lead roles of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy are yet to be cast.

Director Tristram Shapeero definitely has the comedy chops – he’s worked on Green Wing, Peep Show and Brass Eye – but hasn’t this poor book been adapted to death already? As well as the huge success of the 1995 BBC series (which led to the Daily Mirror running a memorable feature called “Calm down girls, it’s only Colin Firth”) we’ve had Firth himself as another Mr Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary, the sexed-up 2005 Keira Knightley/Matthew McFadyen P&P , Bollywood crossover Bride and Prejudice… the list goes on.

Our favourite? 1990 TV movie Pride and Extreme Prejudice, written by Frederick Forsyth and starring Brian Dennehy as “an unstable former operative pursued by both FBI and CIA”. Andrew Davies, watch and learn.
