Actor Patrick McGoohan dies aged 80

Patrick McGoohan, star of the 1960s cult show The Prisoner, died yesterday in New York at the age of 80. The film and television actor passed away after a brief illness according to a family spokesman.

McGoohan was best known for his role as Number Six in the ITV series The Prisoner in which he played a former secret agent held captive in a mystery village. The series spawned the immortal tag line "I am not a number - I am a free man!"

The New York born actor, who grew up in Britain and Ireland, was also in the running to become the first ever James Bond before the job was given to Sean Connery. More recently McGoohan starred as the evil King Edward Longshanks in Mel Gibson's 1995 film Braveheart.
